IEEE Updates 802.11 Spec With Improved Cellular Hand-Off | Tech NEWS

The Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers today announced a revision to the base 802.11 specification. The IEEE is referring to the new spec as IEEE 802.11 – 2012, and it includes a wide range of enhancements for the wireless networking technology. The base improvements include support for more devices and networks that are faster, while maintaining high levels of security and quality. The new spec includes improved cellular network hand-off, direct-link setup, fast roam, radio resource measurement, support for the 3650-3700MHz band, mesh networking, broadcast/multicast and unicast data delivery, interworking with external networks and network management. Features such as improved cellular hand-off will be particularly useful to users of mobile devices who are roaming between cellular and Wi-Fi networks.
